Perhaps you have heard of the 'Bucket of Crab' mentality. I am talking about the kind of mindset that says "if I cannot have it, neither can you." It is a way of invalidating someone else's happiness by dragging that person down to their inadequacy. This often gets expressed by a friend or family member who does not like or discourages you from reaching for a greater achievement or stretching beyond that which is usually the norm for a culture. Everyone's been there.

It's the same with tribal mindset. The tribe is used to serve and keep the culture in a sustained state of relative safety. Each member has a clearly delineated and extremely valuable role and function. If you wanted to go beyond (as is our very nature) you actually put the entire tribe at risk. You are taught: "I can't expand past what the tribe teaches, otherwise I'd be cast out and suffer certain death". You'd be exiled without food or water and without another tribe for hundreds of miles.

However, you are wired to create. Your inherent nature is to expand, express, want, and manifest. Then go for another fun project or dream to reach. I have read that before a child reaches 5 years of age, they have been told the word 'No' over 60,000 times! It would seem that our nature and our culture are in conflict with one another.

It is no wonder conflicting belief constructs, critiquing mental monologue and fear of success bring us down most of the time. It has been stamped into our programming. This is called cognitive dissonance. It is like interference in your head when you have two opposing ideas at the same time. This dissonance becomes detrimental and begs for a solution. It gets resolved in one of two methods. Either by returning to old, known beliefs, or by letting go of the old to strive for a new level. It's a small wonder with the programming we have adopted that it can be so difficult to make any effective change. The truth is, it is not your fault.
